NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's tennis concluded the 2018 regular season on Monday with a flourish, sweeping Coppin State 4-0 at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The victory moves the Spartans to 8-5 on the season and 3-1 in MEAC Northern Division contests, giving NSU its first overall winning season since the 2014 squad finished the regular season at 12-6.
The Eagles (1-10, 0-4) defaulted at No. 3 doubles, and
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel won 6-0 at second-seeded doubles to clinch the point.
At No. 1 doubles,
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu held a 4-2 advantage over Gavin Lewis and Jorge Rodriguez Rey when doubles competition ended.
Another default by CSU, this time coming at No. 6 singes, gave NSU an early 2-0 edge. The Spartans won their first two singles flights to seal the match.
On the second court, Alcaraz dispatched Lewis 6-0, 6-1.
Flavian Fernandez ended the match early with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Gabriel Franca at third-seeded singles.
The top-seeded flight between Da Silva and Rodriguez Rey went unfinished with Da Silva leading 6-3, 2-1.
NSU now awaits the release of the MEAC Tournament bracket. The tournament runs April 26-28 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
