NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman
Kayla Porter garnered the fifth weekly award of the season for a Norfolk State softball player after she was named the MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday by the conference office.
She hit 5-for-10 over the weekend in NSU's three-game sweep of Howard on the road. The Morehead City, North Carolina native scored three runs with one double, one walk and four RBI.
Her best game came on Saturday in the second contest of a doubleheader. She hit 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in three runs in NSU's 18-1 victory. She also drove in a run and then doubled and scored in the third game of the series on Sunday, a 10-5 win.
For the season, she is hitting .268 in 71 at bats with eight runs, four doubles, five walks and eight RBI.
It marked the fifth MEAC weekly award for NSU softball, and the second rookie of the week award this year after freshman pitcher
Skylar Swain was honored on Feb. 26.
Porter shared the award this week with Coppin State's Nia Bowe.
The Spartans will host North Carolina Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then Radford at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in a pair of non-conference doubleheaders.
