NSU Sweeps MDES 7-0, Lee Records First Singles Win

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis concluded the 2018 regular season with a 7-0 sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The win pushes the Spartans (4-9, 3-3 MEAC) to .500 in Northern Division contests, and NSU receives the division's fourth seed in the upcoming MEAC Tournament.

NSU made it through doubles play unscathed, winning all three flights without losing a game. The Spartans collected a default victory at No. 3 doubles and 6-0 wins on both the first and second courts.

At No. 1 doubles, Dajana Cvjetkovic and Paula Fortuno defeated Sarah Adewumi and Kenza Katema 6-0. Ana Popovic and Bruna Goncalves followed suit with a 6-0 result over DaTonya Price and Melanie Copey.

In singles action, Norfolk State collected another victory by default and won four of the remaining five matches in straight sets.

Fortuno swept Michal Kittrell 6-0, 6-0 in the second-seeded flight to start play. Popovic then followed with another 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Katema on the third court.

Goncalves continued the string of clean sweeps with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Price in the fourth-seeded flight. Cvjetkovic then collected a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Adewumi in the top-seeded match.

The highlight of the afternoon came in the final match, where Tyrika Lee collected her first singles win of the season. The sprinter for the track & field team split the first two sets with Copey 6-0, 5-7 before prevailing 10-5 in the super tiebreaking set, taking the last five points of the tiebreaker.

NSU now awaits the release of the official bracket for the MEAC Tournament, which runs April 26-28.
