FARMVILLE, Va. – Norfolk State men's tennis took the doubles point but could not carry the momentum into singles play in Sunday's 5-2 loss at the Lancer Courts.
Andres Alcaraz starred for the Spartans (6-4), going undefeated across doubles and singles competition.
NSU won two out of three in doubles action to take a 1-0 lead. At top-seeded doubles, Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu combined to defeat Jorge Godoy and Valentin Popescu, 7-5.
The Lancers (12-8) won at No. 2-seeded doubles, as Amadeo Blasco and Raisei Sakai downed
Vini Da Silva and Ignacio Gueven, 6-2.
At No. 3 doubles,
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo won 6-3 over Lachlan Manser and Daniel Hernandez.
In singles action, Longwood won five of six matches to secure the win.
Blasco prevailed over Da Silva, 6-1, 6-2, at top-seeded singles. Alcaraz provided NSU's lone victory in singles action, defeating Sakai in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, on the second court.
In the third-seeded flight, Popescu edged Fernandez in three sets, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Dumitrascu also went the distance with Julian Farthing before falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4-seeded match.
On court five, Carrizo took Godoy to three sets, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Hernandez rounded out singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Guevel.
The Spartans close out the regular season with three-straight home matches, beginning with an April 12 showdown with Hampton at 4 p.m.
