EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Junior Martha Bissah picked up where she left off last season, as she opened the 2018 NSU women's cross country season by claiming first place on Saturday morning at the University of Virginia Duals.

Bissah completed the 4,000-meter course in 14 minutes, 21.33 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Bissah won three individual meets last cross country season before a stellar track season which she capped by earning first-team All-America honors in the 800 meters in June.

Ashah Koech was the Spartans' next-highest finisher in the meet which included runners from U.Va. and James Madison. She placed 20th in 16:03.11. Senior Candice Higgins was close behind in 16:17.68, Caroline Samoei was 22nd in 16:20.86 and Nelly Jerop rounded out the top five in 25th place.
