ORLANDO, Fla. – In its first action in nearly a month, the Norfolk State men's tennis team fell 4-2 to Bethune-Cookman at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Florida. The Spartans (1-2) received a win at No. 5 singles from
Agustin Carrizo and a victory via default at No. 6 singles.
NSU had the inside track on the doubles point as the Wildcats (3-4) defaulted on the third court. However, B-CU won both contested matches to take an early 1-0 advantage. At top-seeded doubles, Victor Bravo and Phillip Lynch defeated
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo, 6-2, and
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel suffered a 7-6 defeat to Jose Plazas and Juan Navarro.
A B-CU default at No. 6 singles quickly tied the match at 1-1, but the Wildcats won three of the four completed matches to seal the win.
A win at No. 2 singles gave B-CU a 2-1 lead after Victor Castro downed
Andres Alcaraz in three sets – 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Wildcats then moved to within a point of clinching the match with Plazas' 6-3, 7-5 win over
Dan Dumitrascu on the fourth court.
Carrizo kept the Spartans alive at No. 5 singles, where he defeated Navarro by a 6-3, 7-5 score.
Lynch provided the clinching point for the Wildcats on the third court with a three-set triumph over Fernandez – 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Da Silva's top-flight match against Bravo was deep into the third set when the match finished. Da Silva and Bravo had split the first two sets, and Bravo was up 5-1 in the third.
The Spartans look to rebound tomorrow against Appalachian State.
