BALTIMORE, Md. – Norfolk State men's tennis took another step towards an undefeated MEAC record with a 7-0 win over Coppin State at the CSU Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Two doubles wins gave the Spartans (5-6, 2-0 MEAC) a 1-0 lead, and NSU never looked back.
On court two,
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu defeated Prabh Bal and Henrique Sada, 6-2.
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo then sealed the point with a 6-4 win over Jorge Rodriguez Rey and Sam Scala-McNeill on the first court.
The third doubles flight was not contested.
A default by the Eagles (0-9, 0-2 MEAC) on the sixth court gave NSU a 2-0 lead heading into singles play.
Carrizo picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Henrique Sada on the second court before a 6-0, 6-4 win by Fernandez against Scala-McNeill at No. 3 singles clinched the win for the Spartans.
Moving up to top-flight singles, Alcaraz downed Rodriguez Rey in three sets. Alcaraz dropped the first set, 6-2, before a 6-3 win in the second. The Pachuca, Mexico native then pulled out an 11-9 victory in the tiebreaking set.
Dumitrascu swept Bal – 6-1, 6-1 – on the fourth court, and
Ignacio Guevel wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Zaipo Oula in the fifth-seeded flight.
The Spartans close out MEAC Northern Division action on Sunday against reigning tournament champion Morgan State.
