| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State softball senior pitcher Shannon Buffington was selected in the ninth round of the American Softball Association (ASBA) 2019 draft last Wednesday. The former Spartan was picked by Moh-BEEL! USA.

The ASBA consists of four teams that play a month-and-a-half schedule between mid-June and the end of July. Games are played at the Pat Hicks Softball Field in Satsuma, Alabama. Buffington was the last of four selections in the ninth round of the draft.

A native of Virginia Beach, Buffington pitched the previous two seasons with the Spartans after arriving from Richard Bland College. During her senior year in 2019, she pitched 61.2 innings and held a 3.06 ERA with a 3-2 record. She ranked fifth in the MEAC in ERA as well as second in saves (2) and relief appearances (20). She also stood in the top 35 in the nation in fewest walks per seven innings (1.25).

Buffington was one of three seniors on this year's team that won the MEAC Northern Division title at 11-4 and went 25-20 overall for the first winning season since 2013.
