NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball duo of senior catcher
Kylee Lopez and junior outfielder
Shelby DesChamps were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Team. The organization announced the 2019 teams and major award winners on Monday.
Lopez was voted to the VaSID All-State First Team, and DesChamps earned a place on the second team. Both earned all-state accolades for the second straight year after they were voted to the second team in 2018.
Wrapping up her collegiate career, Lopez earned first-team All-MEAC honors this season after hitting .340 this year with eight home runs and 38 RBI. She also earned MEAC All-Tournament Team honors after a strong showing at the tournament. On the year, the Norfolk native scored 29 runs with 48 hits, four doubles, eight stolen bases, a .406 on-base percentage and a .539 slugging percentage.
She tied for the league lead in home runs and RBI and ranked fourth in total bases (76). Lopez ended her career as the school's all-time home run leader with 29. This year marked the first time NSU had a player on the all-state first team since 2014.
Like Lopez, DesChamps was also named first-team All-MEAC this season. She batted .383 on the year with 42 runs on 59 hits and 22 stolen bases. DesChamps ranked second in the MEAC in runs, hits and at bats (154) as well as fifth in batting average and stolen bases. A native of Virginia Beach, she also added eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 16 RBI while posting a .481 slugging percentage and a .425 on-base percentage.
James Madison's Kate Gordon and Megan Good took home the Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards, respectively. The other two major awards went to Virginia Tech's Pete D'Amour (Coach of the Year) and Kelsey Bennett (Rookie of the Year).
NSU finished 25-20 overall this year, 11-4 in the MEAC. The Spartans won their first regular season title in the league after finishing first in the Northern Division. Lopez is one of three seniors the team will have to replace along with second-team All-MEAC pitcher
Hunter Halford and pitcher
Shannon Buffington.
