Spartans Notch 10 Hits, But Fall to ODU 12-5

NORFOLK, Va. – Andy Garriola drove in five runs to lead Old Dominion to a 12-5 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Alsander Womack homered and drove in four runs, and freshman Raphy Rodriguez notched the first three hits of his career for the Spartans (0-3), who had a season-high 10 hits.

Womack walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Jacob Council to give NSU a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. ODU tied the game on Garriola's RBI single in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead in the second on Ryan Teschko's solo homer.

Womack's RBI groundout in the top of the third scored Danny Hosley, who singled earlier in the inning. But Garriola hit another RBI single and Matt Coutney doubled him in to push the Monarchs in front, 4-2, in the bottom of the third.

Garriola stayed hot with a three-run double in the fourth as ODU extended its lead to 8-2.

Womack blasted a three-run homer in the fifth to score Hosley and Rodriguez and cut the Spartans' deficit in half. But the Monarchs got an RBI triple from Chris Dengler in a three-run fifth, and added another single tally in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Womack finished 1-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Rodriguez, making his first career start at shortstop, was a perfect 3-for-3 and scored once. Hosley finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Garriola finished 3-for-4 for ODU, and four other Monarchs had two hits each.

Dalton Barham (0-1) was charged with the loss. In his first career appearance, the redshirt freshman struck out three and allowed two runs over two innings pitched. NSU used six pitchers in the game, with three making their first collegiate appearances. Freshman Nolan Manzer was the last of those. He tossed to scoreless frames with two strikeouts.

The teams play the last of their four-game series at 2 p.m. Wednesday at ODU.
