NSU Sweeps Virginia Wesleyan, 7-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – For the second straight day, Norfolk State tennis came away with a sweep of Virginia Wesleyan. On Wednesday afternoon, it was the men's turn.

NSU won all three doubles matches on the way to a 7-0 victory over the Marlins at the Everett Tennis Center. The Spartans improved to 1-1 on the year.

"This was a good first win for us after the loss at ODU," said head coach Larry Holmes. "Virginia Wesleyan is a good team, and this was a nice measuring stick for us. The guys played through some adversity and continued to compete. Credit to our seniors Ignacio and Andres for leading the way today. We still have some things to improve upon that we learned from this match."

One day after the Spartan women also won 7-0 over Virginia Wesleyan, the men did the same despite a couple of close matches. In doubles, the closest match came at the No. 3 position, where sophomore Ibrahim Abbas and freshman Ivan Ivars defeated Anthony Wilson and Connor Cummings, 7-5.

Senior Ignacio Guevel and junior Federico Rebecchini posted a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Mitchell Perry and Felix Bevc. Senior Andres Alcaraz and freshman Santiago Rendon did not drop a game in a 6-0 win against Michael Portela and Henry West.

Rebecchini (6-0, 6-2) made quick work of Perry at the No. 1 singles position, and Rendon did the same with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Portera at the fourth spot. Ivars helped NSU clinch the win with his 6-1, 6-4 victory against West at the No. 5 position.

Guevel earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Wilson at the third spot, while Alcaraz needed tiebreakers in both sets to defeat Bevc at the second slot. He won the first-set tiebreaker 8-4 and the second set tiebreaker 8-2 for a pair of 7-6 victories in straight sets.

Abbas, meanwhile, had to rally after falling 6-2 in the first set to Cummings at the sixth position. He did just that, defeating Cummings 6-2 and 7-5 in the second and third sets, respectively.

Norfolk State will next host Temple on March 13 at 2 p.m.
