Radford Shuts Down NSU’s Offense in Pair of Friday Wins

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State finished with just six hits on the day as Radford came away with a pair of wins over the Spartan softball team, 4-0 and 5-3, on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.

The Spartans had just two hits in the shutout loss in game 1, while the Highlanders scored three unearned runs in the second contest for the sweep and their first victories of the year.

Junior Brooke Bond had two of NSU's hits in the second contest. She also pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed one unearned run and no hits as the Spartans fell to 2-4 on the season.

Jessie Marvin (1-4) gave the Highlanders their first win of the season after striking out five and allowing just the two hits in seven innings in game 1. Radford (2-7 overall) scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a walk in the seventh closed out the scoring.

Sophomore Alexis Robinson (0-3) got the loss despite allowing four hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

The Highlanders plated two runs in the top of the first in game 2, while NSU got a run back in the fourth when the Highlanders committed an error with the bases loaded. The Spartans stranded all three runners that inning, and a pair of errors on NSU on one play in the fifth scored two more for a 4-1 Radford lead.

Down 5-1 an inning later, the Spartans got an RBI double from Bond in the sixth and an RBI single from sophomore Elizabeth Ritchie in the seventh to close the gap before the final out.

Sarah Smith (1-1) picked up game 2's win for the Highlanders after allowing four hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Sydney Fisher and Riley Oakes, hitting in the top two spots in the lineup for Radford, combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs scored.

NSU will host Youngstown State on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. for two more doubleheaders this weekend.
