NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State won all six singles matches in straight sets in earning a 7-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon in men's tennis action at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans won their sixth in a row, overcoming a sluggish start in doubles to improve to 7-3 overall. The Marlins (4-4) won at No. 1 doubles but could not take a set from NSU in singles.
Freshmen
Santiago Rendon and
Ivan Ivars made quick work of their opponents at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Rendon won 6-1, 6-1 over Anthony Wilson, and Ivars topped Henry West 6-0, 6-2 in his match. Sophomore
Ibrahim Abbas also lost just two games, topping Connor Cummings 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
Senior
Ignacio Guevel posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Michael Portera at the fifth singles position. The Spartans also won at the top two spots in the lineup, with junior
Federico Rebecchini earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over Felix Bevc at No. 1 singles. Senior
Andres Alcaraz won 6-2, 6-4 over Mitchell Perry at the second position as well.
Alcaraz and Rendon swept their No. 2 doubles match, winning 6-0 over Wilson and West. Ivars and Abbas helped the Spartans take the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph against Portera and Cummings at the No. 3 position.
Virginia Wesleyan did find success at the top doubles slot, as Bevc and Perry posted a 6-4 win over Rebecchini and Guevel.
NSU will play its last match of the regular season on April 18 at home against James Madison beginning at 2 p.m.
