SMYRNA, Del. – Norfolk State University rolled to yet another MEAC men's cross country title Saturday at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center, securing their third straight championship and extending their own league record by winning their 15th title all-time.
Also for the third straight year, the Spartans swept the top three places, though NSU had a different runner take home the title each time. This year it was super sophomore Gidion Sigei, who had the fastest 8K time coming in and was true to form by running away with the title. He finished the course in 24 minutes, 38.8 seconds, 54 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Regan Kimtai.
Sigei became the seventh Spartan male to win the MEAC individual title, and his victory was the ninth occurrence all-time that a Spartan topped the medal stand (former Spartans David Kemboi and Dominic Luka each won the title twice).
Kimtai posted a time of 25:32.1. This year was Kimtai's first All-MEAC honor with NSU, but third altogether include his years at North Carolina A&T.
Evans Cheruiyot, last year's MEAC champ, posted a solid third-place time of 25:41.1. He collected his third All-MEAC honor.
NSU had all five of its top runners place in the top 10 and earn all-conference accolades. Sophomore Brian Rotich was sixth in 26:24.9 and
Isa Suleiman earned All-MEAC for the second straight year, placing ninth in 26:48.2.
The Spartans finished with 21 points as a team. Howard was a distant second with 59.
NSU head coach
Kenneth Giles, who has been head coach for all 15 NSU cross country titles, was named MEAC Cross Country Most Outstanding Coach for the 15
th time.
The Spartans will compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional at Louisville on Nov. 11.
