LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Facing an AP top-10 opponent for the second time in four days, Norfolk State dropped a road bout with No. 8 UCLA 86-56 on Monday night.
Â
Kris Bankston led the Spartans with 17 points and nine rebounds, shooting 8-of-11 from the field.
Cahiem Brown made the most of 25 minutes off the bench, showing off his versatility with 13 points and four assists.
Â
UCLA guard Jaylen Clark paced the Bruins with 19 points, making five shots from behind the arc. The Bruins converted 11-of-25 3-point attempts (44 percent), scoring 16 points off Norfolk State turnovers.
Â
Christian Ings got the Spartans on the board with a driving layup, before Bankston knocked down a mid-range jumper to tie the game at four. Beale sank a contested jump shot as well, but the most noteworthy highlight of the night would come moments later.
Â
Pushing the ball up the floor after UCLA's made free throw, Ings went coast to coast, speeding past multiple Bruins on his way to the rack. A UCLA big stood in the point guard's path as he reached the rim, but Ings soared above the defender, punching the ferocious dunk down with authority.
Â
Daryl Anderson hit two 3-pointers about two minutes apart, trimming UCLA's lead to six, but the Bruins continued to make tough shots at the other end. The home team knocked down a trio of deep balls in the final minutes of the second quarter, taking a 13-point cushion into the half.
Â
UCLA scored the first seven points of the second period, before Ings stopped the Spartans' draught with a driving layup. The Bruins went on a 14-0 run shortly after, boosting the lead to 32 and paving the way for a home victory.
Â
Brown and Bankston shouldered most of the scoring load for the Spartans late, combining for 17 of the team's 23 second half points. Bankston rose for a pair of two-handed slams in the game's final minutes.
Â
Norfolk State (2-2) continues a four-game road stretch with a 7 p.m. bout at Monmouth on Thursday. The game will be aired on FloHoops.
