VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Norfolk State bowling team played in its own back yard over the weekend at the MEAC #2 Meet of the season. The event took place at Pinboy's at the Beach and followed a traditional style of action. The Spartans went 1-7 over the two-day event, including a win over the sixth-ranked team in the country.
On Saturday, NSU opened with a tie-break loss to Howard. Both teams knocked down 828 pins, but the Bison came away with the win. The tiebreak consists of a modified Baker match where each team bowls the last five frames and each bowler bowls one frame.
MDES scored nearly a perfect team game with 980 pins knocked down to outlast the Spartans 980-830. DSU missed 13 pins against NSU in the third round to come away with a 987-872 win.
NSU dropped their final two rounds of the day against Coppin State (869-826) and Monmouth (915-898).
On Sunday the Spartans fell to UAB (859-785) and Morgan State (1012-843), but finished the event with an 899-885 huge win over nationally-ranked #6 North Carolina A&T.
Junior Megan Wheat bowled a 201 in the second round against MDES and ended Saturday with a 189.6 average. Classmate Chanel Staton also bowled strong on Saturday with a 181-4 average over the five rounds. In Sunday's win over the Aggies, Freshman Jazmin Esquibel bowled a 224, the highest game for a Spartan on the weekend.
NSU returns to the lanes on Friday when they travel to participate in the Stallings Invitational. The three-day event is hosted by NCA&T in Greensboro, N.C.
