Bears Win Rubber Game Over Spartans, 6-2

NORFOLK, Va. – Morgan State scored two runs in each of the first, third, and fourth innings to win the rubber game 6-2 over Norfolk State from the NSU Softball Field in MEAC action on Sunday. The loss drops the Spartans to an even 3-3 in the MEAC and 16-15 overall while the Bears move to 5-1 in conference play and 14-11 overall.

After a top of the first that saw MSU score twice and Cam Andersen get out of two more runners on second and third with a pop up and fly out to end the inning, NSU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. A throwing error at third allowed Imani Moore to reach base and take second. Going on the pitch, Moore would steal third, before Kenna Higa singled up the middle to put the Bears' lead at 2-1. Victoria Fletcher induced a strikeout and lineout to shortstop to end the inning.

The top of the second saw MSU retired in order with Andersen picking up three-straight strikeouts. But the Spartans were unable to tie the game up despite getting a runner to third. A hit and an error in the top of the third platted two runs for the Bears to triple their lead after three innings.

MSU would add another two runs in the fourth on two hits and another Spartan error to extend the lead to 6-1.

In the sixth, with one out, Rylie Gilbreath single through the left side before Lauren Sheehan pinch hit for Yrral Davis. Sheehan reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third when the third baseman threw to second to attempt to force out Gilbreath but ended up throwing the ball nearly to the warning track out in right center field, scoring Gilbreath instead.

A scoreless seventh inning allowed the Bears to win the game, 6-2, and the series 2-1.

The Spartans return to the NSU Softball Field on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Virginia State First pitch with the Trojans gets underway at 2 p.m.
