Spartans Earn Split Against Bryant, Rider on Day 2 of Spartan-Pirate Clash

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team split a pair of games on Saturday during day two of the Spartan-Pirate Clash. NSU opened with an 8-3 win over Bryant before falling in the final game of the day to Rider, 7-1 at the NSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring for the day in the second inning when Olivia Fee singled to shortstop allowing Alexis Clancy to score from third. Tuli Iosefa responded for the Spartans, leading off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to center field on an 0-1 count to tie the game at one run apiece.

After NSU loaded the bases in the fourth with a single by Iosefa, a single by Gabby Vaughan and a walk by Kenna Higa, Cam Andersen took an 0-2 pitch to right center field that scored both Hannah Jessie, who was pinch running for Iosefa, and Higa to give the Spartans the 3-1 lead.

The fifth inning saw NSU score three more runs off two hits and two Bryant errors. Vaughan had her second hit of the game and Higa hit a curving ball to left field that scored both Vaughan and Iosefa. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning which kept the Spartans ahead by five. NSU got out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh to secure the 8-3 win over the Bulldogs.

The eight runs against Bryant was the most since the same output against Central Connecticut on February 19 in an identical 8-3 win over the Blue Devils.

Against the Broncs, both teams got on the scoreboard in the first. Grace Stansfield had one of her two hits in the game up the middle that score both Elena Gonzalez and Jessie Niegocki. A bobbled ball by Gianna Epps prevented Rider from throwing to first but allowed them to throw over to third based to take Alison Guckin out trying to reach the base. However, Lily Potter was able to reach home from third before the final out to cut the Broncs lead in half.

Rider would go onto score a pair of runs in the third and three more in the sixth while keeping the Spartans off the scored for the Broncs third win on the weekend.

NSU (9-8) will play in both games on the final day of the Spartan-Pirate Clash when they play a Bryant for the second time on Sunday at 10 a.m. before closing out the weekend with a game against Drexel at 12 noon.
