Hornets Outlast NSU 8-7

NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware State scored five runs in the seventh inning, then held off a ninth-inning Norfolk State rally to come away with an 8-7 win over the Spartans on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Both teams now sit at 4-5 in the MEAC after Friday's series opener. The Spartans fell to 7-15, while DSU improved to 7-11.

The score was tied 2-2 after six when the Hornets made their move. A pair of one-out walks started their seventh-inning push. Trey Paige's RBI single gave DSU a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Brady Daniels hit a two-run double just inside the third-base bag and Alec Rodriguez tacked on a two-run single to make it 7-2.

The Spartans promptly scored four times in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Woods and Raphy Rodriguez hit run-scoring singles and Malcolm Perry knocked in a run with a groundout to highlight the inning, which brought NSU within 7-6.

A two-out RBI single from Miguel Rivera pushed DSU's lead to 8-6 in the top of the eighth, and that run proved to be crucial when the Spartans came roaring back in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Minjae Hong singled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Rodriguez, his third RBI hit of the day. Jacob Council followed with an infield single which moved Rodriguez to third base.

But Hornet reliever C.J. Loper struck out Steven Shaffer with runners on the corners to end it.

The teams breezed through the first three innings in less than 45 minutes as starters Nolan Manzer of NSU and Peter Carreca of DSU threw well early. The Hornets broke the stalemate with a two-out RBI single by Mason Brewer in the fourth and another by Krew Bouldin in the fifth.

The Spartan offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Cleveland worked a one-out walk and Perry followed with a single. Rodriguez scored Cleveland with a single up the middle. Council followed with a sacrifice fly that tied it up.

Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two of NSU's five stolen bases. Woods went 2-for-4 and Cleveland scored a pair of runs.

Paige was 3-for-3 for the Hornets.

Carreca (1-0) earned the win by pitching six innings and striking out seven. Loper pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up the save.

Manzer (2-2) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs in 6.1 innings pitched.

The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
