NORFOLK, Va. – After a strong weekend against South Carolina State, Norfolk State softball freshman Kenna Higa has been named the MEAC Rookie of the Week. This is the third time this spring she has won the weekly award after being selected on both March 7 and March 21. She also was named the MEAC Player of the Week on February 28.
Kenna had one of strongest weeks this season for the Spartans, who are on an eight-game winning streak, the longest since 2013 (10). Kenna hit for .625 with five hits on eight at bats. Of her five hits, four of them were doubles for a 1.125 slugging percentage. She finished the week with nine total bases, seven RBI and scored five runs. She was also a perfect 3-3 on stolen bases. For the season, she is leading the MEAC in slugging percentage (.663), OPS (1.154), hit by pitch (9), and sacrifice flies (4). She is second in the conference in OBS (.491), RBI (29), and doubles (12).
The Spartans (24-15, 9-3 MEAC) return home for a MEAC series against North Carolina Central on Friday and Saturday, April 15-16. Friday will feature a double-header with the first game being shown live on ESPNU with first pitch scheduled for 11:02 a.m. and the second game of the doubleheader to follow. The two teams will close out the series with a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m.
