Paige, Hornets Top NSU 4-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Trey Paige homered and drove in two runs to lift Delaware State past Norfolk State 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Bob Reed Field.

The win gave the Hornets (14-16, 11-9) the series win as well after taking three of four from NSU (11-23, 8-12) over the last three days.

Paige hit a solo homer for the Hornets in the first inning, but NSU tied things up in the third. Tanner Brandon drew a two-out walk and stole second before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Dionte Brown, which was the Spartans' first hit of the afternoon.

DSU took the lead for good in the fifth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Paige, who hit a single to score one run. Two more runners scored on the play due to a Spartan error to put DSU ahead 4-1.

NSU got one run back in the seventh on a solo homer by Raphy Rodriguez, his second homer of the year. The Spartans also had a pair of runners on base in the eighth, but DSU reliever C.J. Loper got out of the inning unscathed.

Evan Harris picked up the win for the Hornets on the mound, allowing just one hit and one run with eight strikeouts in six innings. Loper picked up the save with two scoreless innings of relief.

Matt Stanley (0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up one earned run (three total) in 2.1 innings of relief work for the Spartans.

The teams combined for just seven hits, with Paige having the only two-hit game for either squad. In addition to Brown's and Rodriguez's RBI hits, Jacob Council also hit a double for NSU.

The Spartans are back home Tuesday to face Longwood at 4 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field.
