NORFOLK, Va. – After stellar performances in a MEAC series sweep over DSU, Norfolk State softball team members Gabby Vaughan and Kenna Higa have been named the MEAC Player of the Week and MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively.
This is Vaughan's first career weekly MEAC honor with Higa having been named the Rookie of the Week now for the fifth time while also previously winning the MEAC Player of the Week.
Vaughan had an incredible Senior Day weekend for the Spartans. In the three game sweep over Delaware State, she hit a dominating .857 with six hits in seven at bats. This included a double and a pair of home runs. The one walk she drew was an intentional base on balls. Her slugging percentage against the Hornets was an astounding 1.857. She also finished with four RBIs and was 1-1 on stolen bases. Overall, for the week she batted .643 with a 1.143 slugging percentage.
Higa had an incredibly strong weekend in the series sweep of Delaware State. In the three games, she batted .429 with a 1.286 slugging. In game one, she hit her first career grand slam, her seventh home run of the season. Overall, she went 3 for 7 with two home runs and eight RBI. After the weekend she leads the MEAC in slugging percentage (.717), OPS (1.202), RBIs (41), home runs (8), HBP (9), and sacrifice flies (4).
The Spartans (30-17) travel for their last regular season non-conference doubleheader at NC State on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C. First pitch with the Wolfpack is scheduled for 1 p.m.
