Spartans split season opener doubleheader against Youngstown State

NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University softball team earned a split of its two games on opening day of the 2023 season. The Spartans opened the doubleheader with a 9-4 win over Youngstown State, before dropping game two, 6-4, on Monday at the NSU Softball Field.

YSU (1-1) took the early lead in the first game, putting a single run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. NSU answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of walked in runs from Jade Dixon and Leah Wisswell taking a 2-1 lead.

The Penguins knotted the score at 2 in the top of the third and took a one-run lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth, before the Spartans posted a huge seven-run half inning in the bottom of the fourth taking a 9-3 advantage.

A fielding error and a walk put runners on first and second for Cam Anderson's at-bat who singled through the right side to start the scoring rally. An Imani Moore single scored the second run while Alison Guckin drove in the third on a bunt. Moore came in on a fielders choice during Rylie Gilbreath's turn at the plate, while Gabby Vaughan homered to centerfield driving in the final three runs of the inning.

After both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, Youngstown State added a single run in the top of the sixth but failed to add any more runs falling 9-4.

Neither team managed to find a run in the first inning of the second game, but NSU posted a three-run bottom of the second courtesy of back-to-back singles, from Sky Obispo and Imani Moore, to take the lead against YSU.

The Penguins evened the score at 3 in the top of the third thanks to a two-run homer to left field that was followed by an RBI single. YSU added three more runs in the top of the fourth to claim a 6-3 lead.

The Spartans added one more run to their total in the bottom of the fifth on a Gabby Vaughan single to right center that scored Gilbreath, but NSU could not drive the four runners they left on base to come back and claim the victory, falling 6-4.

The Spartans (1-1) conclude the four-game series against the Penguins on Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
