NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University baseball team opened the 2023 season on Saturday with a pair of one-run losses, 7-6 and 3-2, against Morehead State at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rodriguez followed with a double to left, plating Brown. With one down, Jacob Council singled up the middle, scoring Rodriguez as Norfolk State grabbed the early 2-0 advantage.
Morehead State, which registered seven hits, cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second, but NSU answered with a run in the bottom half, taking a 3-1 lead into the third inning.
The Spartans extended the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Morehead State used a five-run sixth to grab a 6-5 advantage.
The Eagles pushed the margin to 7-5 with a run in the seventh and the Spartans tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Brown opened the frame with a triple to right and came across to score when Rodriguez reached on an error. However, the Eagles closed the door on any rally to pick up the 7-6 victory.
