Evdokimova Notches Singles Victory as Richmond Defeats NSU 6-1

RICHMOND, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore Aleksandra Evdokimova tallied her second singles victory of the season on Friday, as Richmond came away with a 6-1 home victory over the Spartans at Westhampton Tennis Complex.

Evdokimova defeated Richmond's Carly Cohen 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at the No. 2 position for Norfolk State's lone point of the afternoon. The result improved her record to 2-0 in singles play this season.

Richmond swept the doubles competition to earn the first point of the day, although the Spartans made things close on multiple courts.

Evdokimova and Amber Fuller lost to Cohen and Leonor Olivera 7-6 at the No. 1 slot, while Amal Gati and Breana Cook fell 6-2 at the No. 2 position to Andrea Compodonico and Polina Shitikova. At No. 3, Lara Bakhaya and Marta Buendia narrowly defeating Oceanne Lopez and Laura Ruiz 7-5.

Four of the singles matches ended in straight sets while two went the distance. Ruiz battled at the top spot in the lineup, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-4 to Oliveira. Cook couldn't quite complete a comeback effort at No. 6, as Claire Le Du defeated the Spartan sophomore 6-1, 6-4.

Campodonico bested Lopez 7-5, 6-0 on Court 3, before Gati lost to Bakhaya 6-4, 6-3 on Court 5. The losses marked both Spartans freshmen's first dropped singles matches of their careers, after racking up victories against William & Mary.

Fuller set the pace with a strong first set against Elizabeth Novak at No. 4 singles, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 in a three-set thriller.

The Spartans will have a bounce-back opportunity awaiting them almost immediately, facing Liberty at 9 a.m. tomorrow and VCU at 4:30 p.m.
