LEXINGTON, Va. | Justin Journette smacked his second homer of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Norfolk State University baseball team fell in seven innings, 14-4, to VMI on Friday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
VMI (11-8) struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Zac Morris reached on an error and Justn Starke belted a two-run homer deep over the wall in center as the Keydets struck for a 2-0 lead.
Norfolk State (3-13) answered in the third with three runs on four hits.
Dominic Joseph, who reached on a two-double down to left center, came across to score on a Dionte Brown base hit to right. Brandon Cleveland drew a walk and scored on a Raphael Rodriguez single to center, as Brown advanced to third. After a pitching change, Brown scored on a single to right by Steven Shaffer as NSU grabbed the 3-2 lead.
VMI quickly responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs on just one hit and took advantage of three Spartan errors to take a 6-3 advantage.
The Keydets added to the lead with one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth, extending the lead to 11-3.
Norfolk State got a run back in the sixth as Journette belted a solo homer, closing the VMI lead to 11-4.
The Keydets sealed the game with three runs in the seventh for the 14-4 victory.
Norfolk State finished with six hits and committed six errors in the seven-inning loss. VMI registered 14 runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Dalton Barham (0-1) got his first start of the season, going 4.2 innings. He gave up 11 runs (eight unearned) on six hits, with two strikeouts and four walks. Antonio Velasquez worked the final 1.2 innings in relief.
JT Inskeep started on the hill for the Keydets, going 2.1 innings and fanning four. Nathan Hawley, Hunter Sipe (1-0) and Ty Barker pitched in relief.

The Spartans continue their three-game series with VMI on Saturday. First pitch against the Keydets is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Gray-Minor Stadium.
