LEXINGTON, Va. | Justin Journette homered in the fourth inning as the Norfolk State University baseball team concluded its three-game series at VMI with a 15-4 loss to the Keydets at Gray-Minor Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
VMI (13-8) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead and extended the margin to 5-0 with four runs in the second.
Norfolk State (3-15) got onto the scoreboard with a run in the fourth as Journette, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, continued to swing a hot bat, belting a solo homer to center.
Back came the Keydets in the bottom of the frame and put the game away with 10 runs on 10 hits to extend the advantage to 15-1.
The Spartans closed the gap to 15-4 with three runs in the sixth.
Brandon Cleveland opened the inning by reaching on an infield hit. He moved to second when Chance Pollard was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Cleveland scored when Journette reached on an infield single. With the bases loaded, Dionte Brown flied out to right for the sacrifice fly as Pollard scored. Cam Mazell followed with a base hit to center as Steven Shaffer, who pinch ran for Journette, scored from second.
Norfolk State finished with four runs on six hits, while VMI registered 15 runs on 13 hits. The Spartans left three runners on base as the Keydets stranded eight.
Mac Yarbrough (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered 10 runs on 10 hits, with seven walks and six strikeouts. Matt Stanley and John Horton saw action in relief.
Will Riley (1-0) started for the Keydets as he fanned five, gave up one earned run and three hits in four innings of work. Alex LaRou, Derrell Fletcher-Knight and Marcus VanSlstine pitched in relief.

The Spartans will not play a mid-week game this week as Norfolk State begins a three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series on Friday against Central Connecticut State. First pitch against the Blue Devils is scheduled for 3 p.m. from the CCSU Baseball Field.
