NEW BRITAIN, Conn. | Steven Shaffer and Brandon Cleveland each collected two hits as the Norfolk State University baseball team wrapped up its three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series against Central Connecticut State on Sunday with a 20-2 loss at the CCSU Baseball Field.
Norfolk State (3-18 overall, 1-5 NEC) struck first in the top of the opening inning as Brandon Cleveland began the game with a double to left center and moved to third on a Raphael Rodriguez groundout. Justin Journette ripped a two-out single up the middle to plate Cleveland as the Spartans grabbed a 1-0 lead.
However, Central Connecticut State (12-3, 9-0) answered in the bottom of the frame with seven runs on four hits and took advantage of an error to take a 7-1 advantage.
The Blue Devils extended the lead with two runs in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 15-1 lead.
CCSU continued to add onto the lead and plated five runs in the seventh to push the advantage to 20-1.
Norfolk State picked up a run in the ninth as Chance Pollard opened the inning with a double to center and came around to score on a one-out single to right by Cam Mazell.
The Spartans finished with two runs on nine hits, committed four errors, while the Blue Devils registered 20 runs on 20 hits and had one error.
Mac Yarbrough (0-2) took the loss as he surrendered five runs on three hits and walked four in 0.2 innings of work. Max McCrary, John Horton, Nolan Manzer, Matt Stanley and Donovan Whitfield pitched in relief.
Jake Neuman (2-1) earned the victory with a complete game, pitching nine innings. He gave up two runs on nine hits, fanned seven and walked one.

The Spartans conclude their eight-game road swing on Tuesday at VCU. First pitch against the Rams is scheduled for 6 p.m. from The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
