NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University baseball team used a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-RBI by Manny Jackson, to lift the Spartans to a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast Conference (NEC) game at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Much like on Friday, Stonehill (3-18 overall, 1-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings, but the Spartans cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth.
Brandon Cleveland opened the frame with a base hit to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out by Dionte Brown advanced Cleveland to score, Raphael Rodriguez plated the run with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Spartans trailed 2-1 entering the seventh, where Norfolk State struck for four runs on two hits to grab a 5-2 advantage.
Cleveland was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and advanced 90 feet to second on a Brown walk. After a pitching change, the Skyhawks got a force out at third as Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced a base on steals and Jackson produced the big hit, a single through the right side, scoring Brown and Rodriguez. After a stolen base by Jackson, Justin Journette drilled a 2-0 pitch deep over the wall in right, giving the Spartans the 5-2 lead.
The Skyhawks threatened in the ninth inning, but came away empty handed as Mac Yarbrough and John Horton closed the door.
Norfolk State (5-19, 3-5) finished with five runs on 11 hits, committed three errors and stranded 10 on base. The Skyhawks registered two runs on eight hits and left 11 on base.
Zac Capps started on the hill for NSU, working three innings as he surrendered two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one. Max McCrary (3-2) earned the victory as he scattered four hits, walked a pair and fanned two in five innings. Yarbrough and Horton worked the final three outs.
Matt Tyman gave up one run on eight hits, struck out two and walked one in five innings for Stonehill. Joe Castrichini (0-1), Max Brulport and Christian Loescher pitched in relief.
