DOVER, Del. | Zac Capps pitched seven strong innings, but the Norfolk State University baseball team could not overcome two solo home runs as the Spartans fell, 2-0, to Delaware State in the Northeast Conference (NEC) series opener on Friday afternoon at Bob Reed Field.
 
After five scoreless innings, Delaware State (7-23 overall, 3-10 NEC) broke into the scoring column as Wilfredo Mendez led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to right, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
 
DSU doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a run in the seventh as Chris Amparo homered to left with two outs in the frame.
 
Norfolk State (8-23, 5-8) finished with four hits and stranded seven on base. Delaware State registered two runs on seven hits, committed one error and left six on base.
Capps (0-3) surrendered two runs on six hits, struck out five and walked two in 7.1 innings to take the loss. 
Mac Yarbrough and 
Max McCrary worked in relief.
 
Jordan Haddaway (3-2) pitched seven innings to earn the victory. He fanned nine, walked a pair and scattered four hits. Hunter Thompson worked the eighth and Hiram Davis picked up his first save by pitching the ninth inning.
 
UP NEXT 
The Spartans continue their three-game NEC series on Saturday against the Hornets. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Soldier Field.
