FARMVILLE, La. | The Norfolk State University baseball team could not overcome an early five-run deficit as the Spartans fell, 9-3, to Longwood on Tuesday evening at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Longwood (16-24) struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and plated three runs, highlighted by a two-run homer by James Nelson, in the second to race out to a 3-0 lead.
The Lancers extended the margin to 5-0 with one run in the third.
Norfolk State (8-26) got on the board with a run in the sixth.
Jacob Council, who went 2-for-5, led off the frame with a base hit up the middle and moved to second on a Camrin Sturgeon infield hit. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Council came across to score on a groundout by Cam Mazell.
Longwood used a four-run seventh inning to push the advantage to 9-1.
However, the Spartans tried to rally in the eighth as Sturgeon, who went 2-for-3, singled to begin the frame and Justin Journette homered to left center, cutting the Lancers lead to 9-3.
Norfolk State finished with three runs on nine hits, committed a pair of errors, and left 12 on base. Longwood registered nine runs on five hits, took advantage of 11 walks, and stranded 12 on base.
Joe Lafave (1-1) made his first start of the season, working 1.1 innings to take the loss. He surrendered four runs (three earned) on two hits, walked a pair and fanned one. Noah Wiggins, Mac Yarbrough, Liam Royster and Nolan Manzer saw action in relief.
Ethan Walker (2-0) started on the mound for the Lancers, striking out five-of-six batters, while giving up one hit. Sean Gibbons, Reid Dittner, Cole Taylor, Aidan Vanvickle, Wyatt Bunch and Dallas Hairfield pitched in relief.
