DOVER, De. -- The Norfolk State University softball team completed the three game series sweep against the Hornets of Delaware State University at thr Hornets Nest in Dover, De., on Sunday afternoon. NSU won the game 4-3.
Slow and steady won the game on Sunday afternoon after the Hornets jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans.
DSU opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning getting ahead of NSU. After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Spartans broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the third and evened the score at three all with one run in the top half of the fourth and fifth innings as well. The game winning run for Norfolk State came across the plate in the top of the seventh as the Spartans held the Hornets scoreless after the opening frame.
Four different Spartans scored in four different innings driven in by four different batters throughout the game.
The first run was scored by
Jade Dixon in the third inning and was sent home by a groundout to second base by
Alison Guckin. The fourth inning saw
Gabby Vaughan cross home plate as
Lauren Sheehan singled to right field.
A
Yrral Davis single up the middle drove in
Lily Potter in the fifth inning, while the final run came home in the top of the seventh as Guckin came home after
Rylie Gilbreath hit a sac fly to left field.
Norfolk State returns to the diamond this week for a pair of midweek road games at North Carolina State and North Carolina Central. The contest at NC State is set for Tuesday at 3 PM in Raleigh, NC, while the Eagles and Spartans conclude their three game series on Wednesday, April 27, at 12 PM in Cary, NC.
