TEANECK, N.J. | With one swing of the bat, Justin Journette ended a no-hit bid in the sixth inning with a grand slam, but it wasn't enough as the Norfolk State University baseball team ended its series at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday with a 9-4 Northeast Conference (NEC) loss at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Fairleigh Dickinson (24-13-1 overall, 15-6 NEC) picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead.
The Knights stretched the margin to 4-0 with three runs in the third inning.
FDU starting pitcher Ethan Rembish took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but saw it disappear as the Spartans struck for four runs.
Kam Walker began the frame by reaching on an error and with two down, Brandon Cleveland and Raphael Rodriguez drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Journette followed with a grand slam homer, tying the game at 4.
However, Fairleigh Dickinson responded in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, highlighted by a two-run homer by Luke Cantwell, to grab a 7-4 advantage.
The Knights added two more runs in the eighth for a 9-4 lead.
Norfolk State (8-29, 5-13) finished with four runs on one hit, committed a pair of errors and stranded two on base. Fairleigh Dickinson registered nine runs on 11 hits, had one error and left 10 on base.
Antonio Velasquez got the Sunday start for the Spartans as he gave up four runs on five hits, walked five and struck out four in four innings. John Horton (0-3) and Nathan Manzer pitched in relief.
Rembish was on cruise control through the first five innings by not allowing a walk and a hit. However, he surrendered the grand slam to Journette in the sixth and fanned eight in six innings. Brendan Medoro (6-0) and Grant Goodlad saw action out of the bullpen.

The Spartans conclude their eight-game road swing on Tuesday with a trip to Lexington, Va., to face off against VMI. FIrst pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Gray-Minor Stadium.
