NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University baseball team could not overcome a three-run sixth inning as the Spartans fell, 6-3, to Wagner, concluding a three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series during Senior Day on Sunday at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Norfolk State (9-38 overall, 6-21 NEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Justin Journette opened the frame with a double down the left field line and moved to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Dominic Joseph delivered a clutch single through the right side, plating Journette as the Spartans took an early lead.
Wagner (28-21, 19-8) tied the game with a run in the top of the third inning as Ariv Camacho scored on a fielder's choice by Cody Bey.
The Spartans grabbed a 2-1 advantage with one run in the bottom of the fourth as Journette walked and came across to score on a Cam Mazell double to left center.
The Seahawks answered in the top of the fifth with two runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead.
Norfolk State responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 3.
Kam Walker reached on a walk to open the inning and stole second. With one down, Dionte Brown, who went 2-for-3, ripped a base hit into left center, scoring Walker to tie the game.
However, Wagner scored three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning, grabbing a 6-3 advantage.
The Spartans finished with three runs on eight hits, had one error and stranded five on base, while the Seahawks registered six runs on eight hits, committed three errors and left nine on base.
Antonio Velasquez started and got a no decision in five innings of work. He gave up three runs on five hits, fanned six and walked three. Donovan Whitfield (0-3), Matt Stanley, Mac Yarbrough and John Horton pitched in relief.
Julian Taudin-Chabot pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned), struck out nine and walked three. Ryan Bilka (4-1) earned the win, working 4.2 innings in relief.
