Box Score 2 BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Norfolk State University softball team dropped both games in a midweek doubleheader against the Fighting Camels of Campbell University on Tuesday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C. The Camels claimed the first game, 1-0, while also shutting out the Spartans in game two, 6-0.
Game one saw the Camels get on the scoreboard early with a single run scored in the bottom of the first inning, however, the Spartans were able to get themselves out of a few jams as CU left the bases loaded in the first, one left in place in the second, and left two runners on the bags in the bottom of the third.
After the third inning, NSU pitcher
Cam Andersen retired the next nine batters not giving up any hits in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Unfortunately, Campbell's lone run in the first inning was just enough to defeat Norfolk State 1-0.
The Spartans were held scoreless through game one despite leaving four runners on the bases.
Yrral Davis was the only NSU player to record any hits with two in the game. Senior pitcher
Cam Andersen threw a complete game during which she gave up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Camels (37-13), who sit atop the Big South standings, held the Spartans (24-21) scoreless in game two, much like the first game of the day. CU went on to sweep the doubleheader with a 6-0 victory in the late afternoon game.
After Norfolk State held Campbell scoreless in the first, CU opened the gates sending three runs across home plate in the second inning, a pair of runs in the third, and a single run in the fourth to go up 6-0.
NSU managed one hit in game two off the bat of
Gabby Vaughan in the top of the fourth inning. The Spartans only manged to get four batters on the bases throughout the entirety of game two, a credit to Campbell's strong defense and pitching.
Alexis Robinson, senior pitcher for NSU, put in four innings of work during which she gave up the six Campbell runs on 10 hits with a single strikeout.
Lauren Sheehan came in in relief and threw the final two innings giving up a single hit while also collecting one strikeout.
Norfolk State is back in action next Wednesday, May 10, when they return to the NSU Softball Field to host the 2023 MEAC Softball Tournament. Check back later this week for seeding information and who the Spartans will take on in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament.
