NORFOLK, Va. - Nine different Spartans garnered All-MEAC Softball accolades as the league office announced the teams on Tuesday evening in advance of the 2023 MEAC Softball Tournament. NSU placed a trio of athletes on the first-team, five on the second team, and one on third-team.
Representing NSU on the MEAC first-team are
Cam Andersen (P),
Kenna Higa (3B), and
Yrral Davis (OF). Sophomore
Lauren Sheehan (UTL) joins senior teammates
Alexis Robinson (P),
Gabby Vaughan (1B),
Jade Dixon (SS), and
Alison Guckin (OF) on the All-MEAC second-team, while sophomore
Rylie Gilbreath (C) captured a spot on the MEAC third-team.
Andersen has been a leader for the team both in the circle and at the plate. She makes her first appearance on the MEAC All-conference team after helping the Spartan to a 24-21 overall mark and a 14-6 MEAC record. Andersen is hitting .302, tied for second best batting average on the team with fellow first teamer
Kenna Higa, while also collecting a 2.77 ERA with a 10-5 W/L mark in the circle through 106 innings pitched.
Sophomore third baseman
Kenna Higa makes her second career appearance on the MEAC first-team after landing on it last year. Higa sits tied for second on the team in batting average with a .302 average at the plate while is tied for the team lead in home runs with
Gabby Vaughan with both sitting at seven on the year. She is second on the team in assists with a hand in six double plays and a .922 fielding percentage.
Rounding out the first team is senior outfielder
Yrral Davis. Davis is making her first appearance on the MEAC first-team after garnering third-team honors last season. She leads the team with a .326 batting average while sitting second in runs scored (21) and third in RBI (22). Davis also leads the team in fielding percentage sitting at .985 playing a majority of the season in right field.
The Spartans had most of their numbers land on the second team with
Lauren Sheehan (UTL),
Alexis Robinson (P),
Gabby Vaughan (1B),
Jade Dixon (SS), and
Alison Guckin (OF) filling in five of the 11 positions available. Making their first appearance on the All-MEAC teams are Sheehan and Dixon while Guckin and Robinson collected their second consecutive honors. Vaughan tallies her third consecutive All-MEAC honors.
Rylie Gilbreath is the third sophomore to nab All-MEAC honors in 2023 joining Higa and Sheehan. Gilbreath was named to the third-team with Howard and Maryland Eastern Shore catchers claiming the first and second-team catcher positions.
The No. 2 Spartans will face the winner of the No. 3/No. 6 game featuring the Eagles of N.C. Central as the No. 3 seed and Maryland Eastern Shore at No. 6.
