Six Spartans garner VaSID Academic All-State honors

ASHLAND, Va. - Six Norfolk State student-athletes were honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Wednesday when they were named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team for the 2022-23 academic year.

Norfolk State men's cross country/track & field program had a pair of honorees in Dazon Harrison and Evans Cheruiyot, while both tennis programs added an honoree in Aleksandra Evdokimova, women's tennis, and Boris Lunin, men's tennis. The two remaining honorees came from softball in Kenna Higa and football in Anthony Blume. Blume makes his second appearance on the academic all-state team. 

Higa led all student athletes with a 3.95 GPA and was named the Spartans Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the 2022-23 Spartan Choice Awards as the female student-athlete with the highest overall GPA. 

Below are the NSU honorees with their name, 2022-23 classification, hometown, major, GPA, and sport listed:

  • Kenna Higa, So., Honolulu, Hi., General Business/Management, 3.95, Softball
  • Aleksandra Evdokimova, So., Moscow, Russia, General Business/Finance, 3.89, Women's Tennis
  • Boris Lunin, Jr., Chesapeake, Va., General Business/Management, 3.85, Men's Tennis
  • Dazon Harrison, Jr., Alexandria, Va., Interdisciplinary Studies, 3.79, Men's Track
  • Anthony Blume, RJr., Edgewood, Md., Sociology, 3.79, Football
  • Evans Cheruiyot, Sr., Iten, Kenya, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, 3.74, Men's XC
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be a sophomore or higher in standing. Each school in the state of Virginia can nominate up to six student-athletes. There were 36 schools represented and 214 student-athletes honored.
