NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team earned a pair of weekly Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honors yesterday from a duo that has become quite a spectacular tandem.
NSU guard
Diamond Johnson picked up the first MEAC Player of the Week recognition of her career on Wednesday night, while
Kierra Wheeler received MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Spartans split a pair of matchups over the weekend, falling 73-60 at Howard on Saturday before cruising past Mary Washington 99-43 on Monday night to conclude nonconference play.
Johnson averaged 22.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game across the two contests. She capped off the week by posting a career-high 29 points against Mary Washington, shooting 12-of-18 from the floor.
Wheeler anchored the Spartans defensively, averaging 7.0 rebounds, 5.5 steals, and 3.5 blocks per contest during the two-game stretch. During Monday's victory, she became the first player in program history to record six blocks and seven steals in the same game.
