Manzer, Ritter Lead Spartans to 5-4 Walk-Off Victory over CCSU

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team closed its first home weekend with a victory in 11 innings of play, beating Central Connecticut State 5-4 on a walk-off single from Jamal Ritter.

The Spartans received strong performances on the mound from both Joe Lafave and Nolan Manzer. The former closed out the game for the Spartans, giving up just one run in five innings of action.

Central Connecticut State drew first blood with an RBI single in the second inning, tacking on a pair of runs in the fifth as well.

The Spartans began to rally in the bottom of the sixth, starting with back-to-back hits from Kydese Queen and Manny Jackson to put runners in scoring position. Jalan Jones and Cam Mazell drove both players home on the next pair of at-bats, pulling NSU within one.

Manzer pitched a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh inning, allowing just one baserunner in the eighth. The Blue Devils finally added a run in the ninth, the only they would get on Manzer the entire afternoon.

Justin Journette and Raphael Rodriguez recorded a quick pair of singles to begin the charge in the bottom of the ninth for the Spartans. With bases loaded moments later, Collin Curry ripped a two-RBI single through the left side, tying the game 4-4.

Central Connecticut nearly gained back control in 10th inning, loading the bases with one out on the board. Manzer and the Spartans got out of the jam with a spectacular double play, however, nabbing the baserunners on second and third. Manny Jackson, playing catcher, spurred the play with a nifty pump fake towards first base, getting the opposite runner out of position.

The Spartans capitalized in the 11th inning. Rodriguez doubled to right field, nearly supplying a game-ending home run as the ball hit the outfield wall. Ritter ended things from there, singling through the right side to clinch the victory for Norfolk State in dramatic fashion.
