CARY, N.C. – Gabriela Davidescu continued her spectacular stretch of tennis with her seventh consecutive singles victory on Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Spartans to overcome Howard at Cary Tennis Park.
The Bison (7-8, 2-1 MEAC) defeated Norfolk State (2-10, 1-3 MEAC) 5-2, wrapping up the Spartans' weekend at the MEAC Tennis Roundup.
Howard swept the opening doubles point to earn a 1-0 advantage. The Bison won 6-0 on Courts 2 and 3, before taking the top match 6-2 as well.
Howard increased its lead to two as Nadia Pegram defeated
Alessia Stan 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, before Lauren Oliver bested Isabella Cotrell 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot. Imani Jean took down
Laura Ruiz 6-4, 6-1 on Court 4 to provide the clinching point for the Bison.
Three matches went into third sets.
Sabina Maria Iurea got the Spartans on the board with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Dana Hall at the No. 5 position.
Davidescu continued her win streak by beating Sifa Butcher 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-5) at the top of the lineup. Jordan Grayson gave Howard a slim victory at the No. 2 position, defeating Irina Iona Iurea 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-5).
