NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State University softball team fell in both of their games against the Delaware State Hornets,4-3 and 6-2, on Friday at the NSU Softball Field after their starts moved back due to inclement weather.
The Spartans (2-31, 1-6 MEAC) are hosting the Hornets (10-15, 3-2 MEAC) in a series this week at home for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
Junior catcher Rylie Gilbreath's fourth home run of the season came in game two in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gilbreath leads the team in home runs this season, being one of two Spartans to have hit a home run this season. Lauren Sheehan is responsible for the other.
Gilbreath has hit two home runs in the past three games for the Spartans.
Down 4-0 in game one, the Spartans responded by scoring runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh innings.
Three singles by Gilbreath, Aniyah Michalak, and Loren Hudson scored the lone run in the fifth inning.
Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans' comeback was sparked by a fielding error and a hard hit double to center field by Loren Hudson, putting runners on second and third for the Spartans.
Freshman Julia Kearney laid down a hard hit single to the second baseman that allowed her not only to reach but score the runner from third.
The score is now 4-2, with runners on the corners. Kearney took off from first to steal second allowing Zorb, who came in to pinch run for Hudson, to run in to score to bring the Spartans within one run of the Hornets, 4-3.
Kearney put some moves on the Hornets and showcased supreme base-running outrunning the whole Hornets' infield to safely reach second.
The Spartans would fly out and strikeout in their next two at-bats to surrender the win to the Hornets, hindering their comeback just one run short.
Kearney had a great series for the Spartans finishing 5-for-7 with two RBIs and two stolen bases across the two games while finishing with a career-high three hits in game one.
Coming up - The Spartans host Delaware State tomorrow, Mar. 30 at 12 p.m. at the NSU Softball.
