WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sofiya Tsitavets earned a comfortable singles victory on Saturday afternoon, winning Norfolk State's lone point of a 6-1 season-opening loss at William & Mary.
William & Mary swept the opening doubles point, earning 6-4 and 6-2 victories on Courts 1 and 2, respectively. Tsitavets and Sabina Iurea nearly won the third doubles match, falling 7-6 (9-7).
William & Mary's Francesa Davis took down Iona Iurea 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot, before Ine Stange defeated Sabina Iurea 6-0, 6-1. Maniewska clinched the victory for the Tribe with a 6-3, 6-3 win over
Angelina Maniewska at the No. 3 position.
Tsitavets got the Spartans on the board with a straight sets win on Court 2, defeating Alessandra Anghel 6-4, 6-4.
Sara Gonzalez dropped a close match 6-4, 7-5 to Mira Kernagis soon after on Court 6.
Norfolk State continued to fight at the top of the lineup.
Caroline Nicholls won the first set 6-3 against William & Mary top-seed Hedda Gurholt but lost the second set 7-5. Gurholt took the third-set tiebreak 10-6 to close out the match on a high note for William & Mary.
