Jones Drives in Three Runs as Spartans Fall 10-5 to Mount St. Mary’s

NORFOLK, Va. – Jalan Jones recorded three of Norfolk State's five RBIs on Saturday afternoon, but the Spartans couldn't keep up with Mount St. Mary's in a 10-5 loss at Marty L. Miller Field.

Mount St. Mary's (3-0) opened the game with a run in the first inning, but the Spartans (0-3) responded with their first score of the 2025 campaign shortly after. Jaydan Israel got on base with a leadoff walk, before Jones bounced a single through the middle of the infield to bring the runner home a few at bats later.

The Mountaineers scored in the second inning, but the Spartans fought right back. Terrence Rhodes doubled down the fight field line to get in scoring position and Israel drove the run in on his next trip to the plate.

Mount St. Mary's tacked on a third run in the third inning, marking the end of starting pitcher Liam Royster's day. Nyenati Snoh made his collegiate debut on the mound in the fourth inning, but the Mountaineers used a string of hits to take a 7-2 advantage.

Norfolk State continued to battle, producing a two-out rally in the fifth inning. After Brendan Burke and Justin Journette earned walks to get on base, Jones launched a two-RBI double to left centerfield.

The hit pulled the Spartans within three runs, and the score stayed that way for multiple innings. Mac Yarbrough and Donovan Whitfield produced strong pitching performances in relief, helping NSU remain within striking distance.

Mount St. Mary's tagged on two runs thanks to four consecutive walks in the eighth inning, as well as two defensive errors. Jones got on base again and stole second but subbed out after a collision on the play. Emmett Jefferson took his place on the basepaths, getting across home plate on a ground ball from Myles Crocker.

Max McCrary struck out the side in the ninth inning, securing the series sweep for Mount St. Mary's.
