Spartans Fall to Bonnies in Last Games of the Spartan/Pirate Invite

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team played St. Bonaventure at the NSU Softball Field in a doubleheader on Monday after moving the series due to weather this past weekend.

The Spartans (4-3) fell in both games: 3-2 in game and 4-0 in game two to St. Bonaventure (3-1) to finish the Spartan/Pirate Invite.

Early scores by the Bonnies in the first inning gave them a 1-0 lead through six innings. St. Bonaventure would increase their lead to 3-0 after scoring two runs in the sixth on three hits. The Spartans responded with a two run double by Bristyl Riddick in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the Bonnies lead, 3-2.

It all started on a lead off bunt single by Qween Olivia Edmonds, followed by a Maddy Morris walk. A pop up and a ground out advanced runners to second and third, before Riddick's at-bat. Riddick doubled down the left field line to score both Edmonds and Morris for her first collegiate multi-RBI outing.

In the bottom of the seventh, Norfolk State loaded the bases with only one out on a Kailey Bryant single up the middle to start off the inning. Brynna Stuffel pinch hit for Kachelle Refour, walking to put two on for the Spartans. Edmonds out ran a throw by the third baseman on a bunt single to load the bases for the Spartans. Maddy Morris, with a full count fouls off to the first baseman, and Aniyah Michalak struck out swinging to end Norfolk State's comeback attempt just short.

Game two saw the Spartans fall to the Bonnies, 4-0, after they were able to put together 10 hits and no errors.

The Spartans return to action on Friday against UMass Lowell at 3 and 5 p.m. in the Spartan/Pirate Challenge.
