LEXINGTON, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team started strong on Friday against Virginia Military Institute but couldn't hold off the talented Keydets lineup in a 16-4 seven-inning loss.

The Spartans (0-6) became the first team this season to score multiple first-inning runs against VMI (8-1).
Jaydan Israel got things started with a leadoff single, before
Jamal Ritter doubled to center field moments later.
Justin Journette launched his second home run of the year to bring both players across the plate, giving Norfolk State a 3-0 lead.

Norfolk State didn't stop there.
Jalan Jones doubled to get in scoring position before VMI recorded its first out of the day.
Brendan Burke eventually put a ball in play to push Jones forward, giving NSU a 4-0 advantage.

VMI responded with a solo homer in the bottom half of the first inning, but regained control with a five-run second frame. After scoring a run and loading the bases, Grayson Fitzwater hit a grand slam to push VMI ahead 6-4.

The Keydets kept the momentum going in the third inning, piling on another five runs with keen baserunning and multiple defensive errors. After allowing four runs on five hits in the opening frame, VMI starting pitcher Caden Plummer steadied to pitch five consecutive scoreless innings without giving up another hit.
