NORFOLK, Va. - A five-run sixth inning from the Norfolk State softball team secured them a 7-5 comeback victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs at home in the final game of the series Sunday morning.

The Spartans (8-12, 2-1 MEAC) defeated SCSU (5-11, 1-2 MEAC) behind five runs and three hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Emory Shorts reached on a hit by pitch in her at-bat and advanced to second to put a runner in scoring position for the Spartans. 

Freshman Amaya McPherson hit a single to right field to advance Shorts to third. Shorts would continue on to score on a fielding error by the Bulldogs' right fielder. 

The Spartans brought themselves within two scores, 5-3.

Lauren Sheehan singled and Maya Johnson walked to load the bases for the Spartans with only one out.

A fielding error by the Bulldogs' first baseman allowed not only Kachelle Refour to reach, but also allowed Sheehan and McPherson to score, giving the Spartans the lead, 6-5.

With Refour on first and Johnson on third, the Bulldogs' catcher received a throwing error trying to get Refour out on her steal attempt, allowing Johnson to come into score, increasing the Spartans lead, 7-5.

The Spartans never relinquished their lead, defeating the Bulldogs, 7-5.

The Spartans travel to Hampton to face the Pirates in a mid-week game on Tuesday at 12 p.m.
