Savinon’s Gem Lifts FDU Over Spartans

TEANECK, N.J. – The Norfolk State baseball team underwent a rare cold day at the plate in Sunday's series final, falling 6-0 against FDU at Naimoli Complex.

FDU held the talented Spartan lineup to just one hit, tallied by Kydese Queen in the second inning.

The Knights scored four runs in the game's first two frames, to take control early. NSU starter Nathaniel Varnier steadied from there, pitching scoreless third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Jimmy Mantuano got a hold of a sixth-inning pitch to close Varnier's day, pushing FDU ahead 5-0 with a solo homer. CJ Patterson took the mound from there, producing a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Mac Yarbough subbed into the game to face an uncomfortable test in the seventh inning, handling it with poise. The left handed pitcher produced a ground ball double play, getting the Spartans to the eighth without any damage.

A wild pitch scored one more run for FDU in the eighth, as the Knights put the final touches on the series-clinching victory.
