Sixth Inning Rally Helps NCCU Overcome Spartans

CARY, N.C. - In the last game of the series, the Norfolk State softball team fell to the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Sunday at Thomas Brooks Field.

The Spartans (10-14, 3-3 MEAC) are now .500 in Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) play with the loss to the Eagles (5-25, 2-4 MEAC).

In the top of the second inning, Norfolk State took a 1-0 lead behind two hits. The designated player Maddy Morris leadoff with a single to center field. Aniyah Michalak came in to pinch run for Maddy, stealing second.

Bristyl Riddick fouled off to the first baseman, allowing Michalak to advance to third. Lauren Sheehan would then hit a beautiful bunt single directly to the pitcher to score Michalak.

Norfolk State pitcher Brierra Tyler pitched 6.0 innings, two 1-2-3 innings, four scoreless innings, allowing only seven hits and two runs. Tyler also struck out four batters.

The Eagles were held scoreless for three consecutive innings, before scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it 1-1.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Eagles take a 2-1 lead on a walk with the bases loaded. They never relinquished the lead, defeating the Spartans 2-1.

The Spartans travel to Dover, Del. to face the Delaware State Hornets in a series from Mar. 29-30. The first game of the doubleheader set for Saturday begins at 1 p.m.
