Spartans Fall to Presbyterian and Western Carolina in Final Day of Winthrop Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Spartans fell to Presbyterian, 2-0, and Western Carolina, 8-5) in the series finale on Saturday at the Winthrop Tournament at Terry Field.

The second series between Presbyterian (12-10) and Norfolk State (6-11) ends with the Blue Hose taking the 2-0 victory.

Senior Brierra Tyler was in the circle for the Spartans. She surrendered 18 of the 27 batters faced through 6.0 innings, while also holding the Blue Hose scoreless through four consecutive innings.

Presbyterian took an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Amazing defense in the bottom of the second from the Spartans prevented Presbyterian from scoring any runs with only one out.

A hard hit ball to second baseman Emree Sky Obispo was fielded cleanly to catcher Bristyl Riddick to get the runner at home out, before a fly out to left field captured the Spartans another scoreless inning defensively.

A run scored in the sixth inning garnered Presbyterian a 2-0 lead, which they never relinquished.

Queen Olivia Edmonds, Kailey Bryant, and Obispo each garnered hits in game one. Edmonds (19) and Bryant (17) are currently #1 and #2 on the team in hits this season.

In game two, the Spartans tallied a season-high nine hits: Bryant, Riddick, and Lauren Sheehan finished with two, whilst Edmonds, Kachelle Refour, and Amaya McPherson posted one each.

Norfolk State started hot with a run scored in the first inning on a throwing error by the Catamount. Edmonds led off, drawing a 10-pitch walk, to put a runner on for the Spartans.

Bryant followed soon after with a single to second baseman, out running the throw to not only reach but advanced Edmonds.

Edmonds and Bryant both stole at the same time advancing to their next respective bases, but a throwing error by the Western Carolina catcher allowed Edmonds to come home to score, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans fell 2-1 after Western Carolina posted two runs in teh bottom of teh second. The lead wasn't much lived, after the Saprtans tallied a six hit, four hit top of the fourth.

Norfolk State scored four runs behind four consecutive hits. Sheehan started it off, recapturing the Spartans' lead on a two-RBI single to right center.

Refour and Edmonds followed with singles to load the bases for the Spartans for one to be scored by Bryant on a single up the middle.

Ennovi Sandoval pinch hit for Emory Shorts, following Bryant's single, drawing a bases-loaded walk to cap the Spartans' terrific inning, giving them a 5-2 lead through four.

Western Carolina tied it a 5-5 with one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth. They would go on to win after a three-run bottom of the sixth, garnering a 8-5 lead.

The Spatans enter Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this Friday, Mar. 15, against South Carolina State in a "Lupus Awareness" game, featuring guests from the Social Butterflies Foundation.

Edmonds, batting .373 on the year, joined by Bryant, whose batting .354, rank top five in the conference in batting average.
