BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State baseball team produced one of its best showings of the season defensively on Sunday but could not pull out a win against NEC foe Coppin State.
The Eagles defeated Norfolk State 2-0 in a pitching showdown, won by a complete game shutout from CSU starter Kaden Straily.
Nathaniel Varnier put together the strongest showing of his senior season in the loss, allowing just one earned run in six innings while striking out six batters.
Varnier started his day with a 1-2-3 opening inning, flying through the second inning as well. Coppin State earned its first hit of the afternoon immediately after a pair of strikeouts in the third inning, but Varnier forced a popout shortly after to keep the Eagles off the board.
Varnier added two strikeouts in the fourth inning, maintaining the 0-0 score with a timely strikeout in the fifth inning as well. The Eagles finally broke the tie in the sixth inning, loading the bases and drawing a walk for their first run.
Coppin State added an insurance run in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a fielding error from the Spartans. The Eagles kept a Spartan rally off the table, going all nine innings without allowing a single runner in scoring position.
